| The Singer Company |
In 1850 Isaac Merritt Singer, an enthusiastic inventor produced
the first perpendicular action sewing machine, capable of sewing
a continuous straight, curved or angled line, and in 1851 the company,
I.M. Singer & Co. was formed.
By 1856 Singer had introduced hire purchase so that customers could
afford the £100 needed to purchase this wonderful invention.
In 1870 the Red S girl trade mark made her debut and was destined
to become one of the world's best known emblems.
In 1889 the first electric sewing machine was produced.
By 1890 Singer had sold nine million sewing machines.
By 1950/51 Singer had completed 100 years of business operation
and, with annual sales of US$307.8 million, was the world's most
popular brand of sewing machine.
2000/1 Singer enters its 150th year of business operation and is
still the leader in the sewing machine field. The current sewing
machine range continues the tradition of trusted excellence with
the top-of-the-range machine capable of being linked to an unlimited
number of possibilities by computer, and proving that the Singer
name is synonomous with new technology, quality and reliability.
Though times have changed, the Singer philosophy remains the same:
We're still teaching the world to sew, but we're doing it in ways
that appeal to a faster moving technology driven audience.
